Skyros Castle Town

On the way to the top

The Castle Town of Skyros (aka Kastro) is the big fortress of Skyros Chora which occupies the highest area of the village. It dates back to prehistoric times and during the Medieval period it was a fortified settlement where all the residents of the island lived. When the population increased, buildings started to appear out of the castle walls, on the way down to the sea.

The castle is divided into two levels. The first level includes the entrance and the Monastery of Agios Georgios, and on the second level which is at the very top you will see the church of Episkopi, a cistern and a small chapel. People also come for the panoramic views over the village and the long beaches of Molos and Magazia.

The entrance to the castle is free of charge, with working hours from 10:30 to 19:30 everyday.
