Nikiti

old town

Nikiti is one of the larger villages of Sithonia and one of the oldest settlements on the peninsula. It is located in the northwest, between the resorts and Metamorfosi and Neos Marmaras. According to some sources, on this place the ancient city of Galipsos existed, inhabited as early as the 7th century B.C., and many prehistoric sites have been found in the area. In 14 century the village was known as the largest honey producer in Europe.

Nikiti has old neighborhood and new neighborhood, separated by the main road of Sithonia, and it manages to combine the atmosphere of the past with modern conveniences. The old part is situated on a hill and there you can see preserved and restored stone houses from past centuries, small squares and narrow streets, completed by magnificent sea views from the top. There are also several old churches and a Folklore Museum which is worth to visit, and 2.5 km from Nikiti you can visit the ruins of the Saint Sophronius Basillica with mosaics from 16 century.

The new part of the village is located around the coastline. Nikiti is well prepared for tourists with a wide variety of hotels, taverns, cafes, large supermarkets, pharmacies and shops. Every Friday in the village you can visit the traditional local market and taste the famous honey and other local products. Nikiti is also the final destination in the marathon for swimming the Toroneos Gulf (gulf between Kassandra and Sithonia) which is held every summer.

The beach of the resort is not very wide but it is long, with fine sand and beach bars. Many people who stay here prefer to visit the nearby beaches for the day - Agios Ioannis, Kalogria and Koviou. The location of Nikiti is also very convenient if you plan to explore the east coast of Sithonia because Vourvourou and Ormos Panagias are just 7 km away.
