Neos Marmaras is the most famous and second largest resort on Sithonia
. It is located on the southwest coast of the peninsula, between Nikiti
, 118 km from Thessaloniki. It was founded in 1922 by refugees from Marmaras, Asia Minor, and its permanent residents are currently almost 3000 but with tourists in summer it reaches 20 000.
The town is built on the slopes of three hills, part of the mountain Dragondelis covered with pine trees. Dragondelis is the highest point of Sithonia - 811 m. Part of the town is situated on a rocky cape in the sea and gives the feeling of being on an island. This is the place for people who want to combine vibrant nightlife with walks in the nature and uninhabited beaches. The resort offers a variety of hotels and rooms to rent, restaurants, bars and shops. You can rent a car, bicycle or boat, take diving lessons or just lie on the beach. Nearby you can visit the old village of Parthenonas
with well-preserved houses of past times. East of Neos Marmaras is located the largest hotel complex on the Balkans - Porto Carras.
Neos Marmaras has two beaches, east and west, Blue Flag awarded. The resort also has a port where boat trips to the other two legs of Halkidiki
Neos Marmaras overlooks the uninhabited island of Kelyfos, known as Turtle Island (Kelyfos is the Greek word for turtle). Don`t think that you will see turtles there - the name comes from the island shape which resembles a turtle. It is rocky and has no shores. Almost all boat trips to Kassandra
pass by Kelyfos and let the passengers dive into the water around it.
