Ano Sangri

House with beautiful flowers

Ano Sangri (or just Sangri) is a small old village of Naxos, located 6 km from the seaside. The closest beaches are Plaka and Mikri Vigla.

Sangri actually consists of two villages - Ano (Upper) Sangri and Kato (Lower) Sangri. Kato is smaller and it has newer buildings, including a few hotels and villas to rent. Ano Sangri is the older neighborhood where the Venetian influence can still be felt, and the Cycladic architecture is mixed with Neoclassical. It is very peaceful and nice for a walk and you will hardy meet other tourists. Some of the houses still look like mini towers, with plenty of flowers to freshen the white-brown walls. In the central part of the village you can see the Tower Monastery of Agios Elefterios where visitors are allowed 3 hours per day, from 10 am to 1 pm. A taverna and cafe-bar take care of the hungry and tired tourists, both not very far away from the monastery.

Near Ano Sangri is located one of the oldest historical sights of Naxos and namely the Temple of Dimitra (Demeter) - ruins of a marble sanctuary dating back to 1st century and a small museum. It is less than 2 km away from the village, accessible by car or via hiking trail (approximately 20 minutes walk).
