Kouros of Apollonas

Kouros of Apollonas

This tourist attraction is located near the village of Apollonas, on the north coast of Naxos island. Kouros of Apollonas literally means "the sculpture of Apollonas", and more specifically the Greek word "kouros" is used for a sculpture of a nude young man.

The giant statue was discovered in the marble quarries just above the village. It is over 10 meters high but it is not finished and lies in almost horizontal position. Although it was identified as a sculpture of Dionysos, everyone calls it the Kouros of Apollonas, after the village name. The access is free and there are signs to guide you.
