Giannades

The old part of Giannades

Giannades is a beautiful old village in the west part of Corfu, between Ermones and Liapades. It is situated on a hill overlooking the Ropa valley and consists of old and new part, as the oldest area is on the top of the hill.

As you enter the village, the road winds up among the houses and reaches a small square with one bakery and a restaurant. There are also benches to enjoy the view toward the valley, and two mini markets which functions as cafeterias as well. From here you`d better explore Giannades on foot as the alleys are quite narrow. Some of the buildings are centuries old, others are renovated and turned into picturesque private residence. The alleys are full of flowers and make the village really colorful, combined with the pink and yellow hues used for some of the houses. Giannades has almost 600 residents which you will see mainly in the evenings when they gather around the square. A large church dominates the top of the old area.

Below Giannades there is a very scenic blue cove called Giali but it is accessible only by boat. A dirt road going out of the village can take you to the top of the cliffs above the beach but there is no way down to it - the cliffs are vertical and there is chance of landslide. The closest beach reachable by bar is that of Ermones, 8 km away. Gefira, the main beach of Liapades, is 12 km away. No hotels are available in Giannades but there are a few private villas to rent around the village and in the Ropa valley.
