Imerovigli

Imerovigli

Imerovigli is built on the highest point of the caldera (300 m) and it is often called "The balcony of the Aegean". It is very close to Fira and Firostefani and looks like extension of both. According to many people, watching the sunset in Imerovigli is even better than in Oia because, being on a higher level, Imerovigli provides a greater view.

Like Firostefani, this village is full of hotels and villas overlooking the sea but it is smaller and quieter. There are fewer restaurants and cafes and the visitors are less. The most famous place in Imerovigli is cape Skaros - a huge rock which used to be a fortress with observation tower for pirate invasion in the past. Skaros is accessible on foot and allows you to see the entire west part of Santorini. After an earthquake in 1956 all ruins of the fortress and the other buildings were destroyed, so the only building you can see on Skaros today is the small church of Theoskepasti. Another interesting place that is worth to visit in the village is the church of Agios Georgios built at the very edge of the caldera.
