Skaros

Skaros

Skaros is a huge volcanic rock in Imerovigli. In the past it used to be a watchtower and had a fortress on the top, as well as many administrative buildings. According to historical data, it was never conquered due to its height and hard access from the sea. A strong earthquake in the middle of 20 century destroyed all buildings on Skaros and today, the only building you can see there is the small church of Theoskepasti. The position of the rock allows you to see marvelous views of all caldera villages and the islands of Thirasia and Nea Kameni.

The easiest way to reach Skaros is to start from the church of Agios Georgios in Imerovigli. It is a small church with a platform right on the rocks above the sea. From this church you will see the stairs which lead to Skaros. Just follow them and soon you will reach it. The church of Theoskepasti is not visible from Imerovigli - from the top of Skaros you should go down a small path.

If you consider a walk to Skaros, bring yourself comfortable shoes because only part of the route has concrete stairs.
