Afionas

Alley in the old part of the village

Located on the top of a high cliff above the sea, Afionas village offers spectacular views toward the inhabited small islands of Mathraki and Othonoi. It lies on the picturesque west coast and just above Agios Georgios - North, overlooking its bay, too.

Afionas is very old village with narrow streets, lots of flowers and the typical architecture of the island. Some of the old houses are renovated and painted in bright colors. There are a few tavernas and cafes at the cliffs, visited mainly because of the breathtaking views. Parking is very difficult in the village because the street for cars ends at its tiny square and the taverns and cafes are further reached on foot via small paved alleys between the houses. Small complexes with rooms to rent are also available.

There is one more place which is worth to see in this village. The cliff on which Afionas is built ends with a small isthmus which has beaches with bays from both sides and it is called Porto Timoni. The cape next to the isthmus is Akra Arilla and excavations there have revealed traces of the Neolithic period, assuming the place served as a harbor in antiquity. The twin beaches of Porto Timoni look really scenic from above, with turquoise water and rocks covered with green bushes. They are reachable via steep and narrow footpaths starting from the village, as the hike takes approximately 30-40 minutes. The beaches are covered with small pebbles and there are stones in the sea but it only contributes to the amazing color of the sea and the exotic landscape. Porto Timoni is not visible from the top of Afionas, you need to follow the paths in order to see it.
