Rotunda

The Rotunda

The Rotunda is one of the oldest preserved monuments of Thessaloniki, located very close to the Arch of Galerius. It dates back to the Roman period and early 4th century when it was first built as a temple dedicated to the patron gods of the Roman empire, later turned into mausoleum of the emperor`s family members. It has perfect circular shape and its height reaches 30 meters inside.

Around 5-6th century the temple was converted into a Christian church which prospered until the Ottoman period when it was turned into Metropolitan Cathedral and later into mosque. In 1912 the monument was converted into Christian church again, devoted to St. George. Some restoration works are still in progress but the Rotunda is open to visitors every day from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
