The small island of Marathonisi lies in the bay of Laganas
and is under the protected of the National Marine Park of Zakytnhos, being a place where the Caretta Caretta turtles swim and nest. That is why they sometimes call it "Turtle island". Many trips are organized only to Marathonisi, or visit the island as part of Zakynthos
tour. There is a great chance to see turtles and even swim close to them. Speed boats run from Laganas and Agios Sostis
and reach the island in less than 10 minutes.
Marathonisi is not inhabited. Apart from turtles, another distinctive feature of the island are its beautiful beaches - one sandy and one pebbly. The sandy beach faces Agios Sostis shore and has a specific shape. The pebbly beach is on the west side of the island and faces cape Marathia and the village of Marathias
. It is smaller and the water is deeper around the shore but on the beach there are sea caves which make it more exotic.
