Marathonisi Island

The small island of Marathonisi lies in the bay of Laganas. It is under the protection of the National Marine Park of Zakytnhos for being a place where the Caretta Caretta turtles swim and nest and that is why they sometimes call it ”Turtle island”. Many trips are organized only to Marathonisi, or include the island as part of a tour around Zakynthos. There is a great chance to see turtles and even swim close to them. Speed boats run from Laganas and Agios Sostis and reach the island in less than 10 minutes.

Marathonisi is not inhabited. Apart from turtles, another distinctive feature of the island are its beautiful beaches - one sandy and one pebbled. The sandy beach faces Agios Sostis shore and has a specific shape. The pebbled beach is on the west side of the island and faces cape Marathia and the beach of Marathias. It is smaller and the water is deeper around the shore but at the beach there are sea caves which make it more exotic.
