The town of Komotini is the main administrative center and capital of Rhodopi Region. It has a population of about 60 000 residents which is increased by the students who attend the Democritus University of Komotini.
Due to its proximity to Turkey, the traditional city architecture is a combination of Greek and Oriental elements which can be seen in the old quarter with preserved houses, churches and mosques. In the central part of the city you can also see the ruins of a large Byzantine fortress. The main square is closed for cars and has plenty of cafes and taverns. The streets which lead to the old quarter are full of cafes and night clubs. Near the main square there is a small park with fountains and playground for children. A free public parking lot is available in a special area opposite the park, next to building of the Byzantine Museum.
Тhe closest beaches to Komitini are those in the area of Fanari and Maronia, at a distance of approximately 30 km.
