Heptapyrgion

Old Byzantine castle atop of the city

Heptapyrgion is the fortress which dominates over Ano Poli, the old town of Thessaloniki. It was part of the city Acropolis, located inside the high walls which can still be seen.

The name of Heptapyrgion means ”fortress of the seven towers” but in fact it has 10 towers. The early construction and planning of the walls and some of the towers date back to the Roman period, while the other towers were built in 12 century. Later the fortress was used as a Byzantine citadel and then as Ottoman prison under the name Yedi Kule.

Heptapyrgion is open for visitors every day except Tuesday, from 08:30 to 15:30. You can have a tour inside and go to the top of the walls to enjoy the sea view.
