Ano Poli

Alley in the old neighborhood

Ano Poli (which means Upper Town) is the neighborhood inside and around the ancient city walls of Thessaloniki. It is also known as the Old Town of Thessaloniki and on the top of it is the Heptapyrgion fortress. Ano Poli has cobbled alleys, old-style houses, some good tavernas and traces of the Byzantine and Ottoman past.

The best way to explore Ano Poli is on foot but you need to be in good physical condition because some of the alleys are quite steep, others have steps. One of the more popular routes from the center to the old town starts from the Ataturk Museum and the direction is up towards the fortress. Apart from the walls and Heptapyrgion, in Ano Poli you can visit other sights like the Vlatadon Monastery (known as the place where St. Paul once preached), the Medieval church of Agios Nikolaos Orphanos, Ottoman fountains, etc.
