Akrotiri is located on the southwestern end of the island. The village is built on the slopes of a hill overlooking the sea and the caldera, with ruins on an old castle on the top. It is 10 km away from the capital Fira. The place is quiet and nice both for a walk and for accommodation. Hotels and taverns are available.
The beach under Akrotiri is called Caldera beach which is the only beach on the west side. The Red Beach and the beach of Messa Pigadia are at a distance of 2-3 km. Near Akrotiri you can visit Faros (the westernmost tip of Santorini with the lighthouse) and the Akrotiri archeological site - the excavations of an almost preserved prehistoric Minoan city.
