Monastery of Agia Varvara Roussanou

Monastery of Agia Varvara Roussanou

The Monastery of Varvara Roussanou (St. Barbara Roussanou), also referred to as just Roussanou, is one of the Meteora monasteries. It is perched on high rock located on the road from Kastraki to Meteora. The rock is lower than the rocks on which the rest of the monasteries are built but yet you have to climb some steps in order to reach it. It is also accessible from the road which goes to the Monastery of Agios Stefanos, through a short path.

The monastery was founded around 1530 and today it is inhabited by nuns. It hosts a small ancient church and a museum with hand-made ecclesiastic souvenirs. Men with shorts and women with trousers or sleeveless tops are not allowed to enter. If you are not dressed properly, the nuns will give you clothes at the entrance. The monastery has a round platform from which you can see many of the monasteries and the rocks.

The entrance fee is about EUR 3 per adult. Visiting hours are as follows:

Monday to Sunday: 09:00 - 16:30
The monastery is closed for visitors on Wednesdays.
