Perithia

Abandoned house in the village

Also known as Old Perithia, ghost village or the abandoned village of Corfu, Perithia is the oldest settlement on the island. Once lively and thriving, the village was completely abandoned by its last residents in 1960, leaving the 130 empty stone houses and 8 churches to ruin in silence. For many years Perithia was haunted by ghosts until it was listed as a traditional settlement and heritage protected site by the government.

Then it was discovered by tourists. First a few authentic tavernas appeared to welcome visitors, and since 2012 there is a guest house on B&B basis. In the last few years the interest for Perithia has been increasing and some of the houses are now being renovated so new small hotels or guest houses are probably expected but the village outlook is still untouched and the newly restored houses are in the old architectural style.

You can find Perithia in the northeast part of Corfu, below mount Pantokrator. It is 14 km away from Kassiopi and Acharavi.
