Panagia Evangelistria

The yard of Virgin Mary church

The church of Panagia Evangelistria, also known as Panagia Tinou, is the most significant religious destination in the Cyclades. It hosts the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary and attracts pilgrims all year round.

The miraculous icon was found in the beginning of 19 century, in the foundations of a ruined church. It happened after a nun named Pelagia had a dream about Virgin Mary telling her where to search for the icon. When the icon was excavated, the new church of Panagia Evangelistria was built on the same place, with the efforts of many people and the use of large quantities of marble.

The celebration of Virgin Mary takes place on August 15 each year, with thousands of pilgrims attending the ceremony. Some of the most devoted of them take the route to the icon on their knees, as they start from the seafront, climb up the street to the church and then to the icon. You will easily notice the route because it is carpeted and because you can see pilgrims on it any time of the year.
