Falassarna

Falassarna

Falassarna (also Phalassarna or Falasarna) it is the name of a beach and an area in the northwest part of Crete, part of Natura 2000. That is why it is not very developed but there are scattered hotels and villas.

The beach of Falassarna is actually a series of five beautiful beaches with white sand and clean shallow water, separated by big sand dunes. The largest beach, called Pachia Ammos, is about 1 km long and 150 meters wide. Sunbeds, umbrellas, snacks and drinks are provided by two beach bars, as well as some water sports. No matter the season, you can always find space and privacy on Falassarna beaches but unfortunately they are often exposed to strong north and west winds due to the open location. Waves are almost always present but in calm weather the sea looks like a large swimming pool because of the white color of the sand and the pebbles on the sea bottom.

In the north end of Falassarna you can see the remains of the ancient harbor town of Falassarna which gave the name of the area. On the rocky cape above the harbor are the ruins of the acropolis.
