Platanos (not to confuse with Platanias
) is a mountainous village in the northwest part of Crete
. It is the closest relatively lively village to Falasarna beach (5 km), with about 1000 permanent residents.
Being a large settlement for this part of the island, Platanos provides main facilities and services - it has a bank office, ATM, gas station, bakeries, mini markets and restaurants. Most hotels and villas are in the outskirts of the village, or in its prolongation known as Kavousi
, which overlooks the bay of Falasarna. Kissamos
with its port is 9 km away, and Elafonisi
beach is at a distance of about 40 km from Platanos.
