Platanos (not to confuse with Platanias) is a mountainous village in the northwest part of Crete. It is the closest relatively lively village to Falasarna beach (5 km), with about 1000 permanent residents.

Being a large settlement for this part of the island, Platanos provides main facilities and services - it has a bank office, ATM, gas station, bakeries, mini markets and restaurants. Most hotels and villas are in the outskirts of the village, or in its prolongation known as Kavousi, which overlooks the bay of Falasarna. Kissamos with its port is 9 km away, and Elafonisi beach is at a distance of about 40 km from Platanos.
