Crypt of Agios Dimitrios

Underground crypt of Agios DImitrios

The crypt of Agios Dimitrios is located in the Church of Agios Dimitrios, and more specifically - under it. It is a very interesting and unusual place to visit. The entrance to the crypt is not designated with signs but you will see a small staircase next to the altar which goes underground.

During the 4th century, the crypt was a Roman bath and it was the place where a young man named Dimitrios was imprison and martyred for propagating Christianity. Subsequently, Dimitrios was venerated and declared patron saint of Thessaloniki. During the years a church was built on the same site and the crypt filled with earth. In 1930 when the crypt was discovered and restoration began but it was officially open to the public in 1988.

The entrance is free but you need to observe the working hours of the crypt from early morning to early afternoon.
