Acropolis of Lindos

The temple and the famous blue bay in the distance

Above the scenic village of Lindos and its white houses, atop a high rock rises the Acropolis of Lindos. It is a significant archeological site with ruins of a citadel, ancient temple and superb sea views.

The first evidences show the existence of a sanctuary of Athinea Lindia around 9 century BC. Later, in 6 century BC a stone temple was built at the highest point of the rock and today you can see a few columns at this place. In the course of years the citadel was used during the Roman, Medieval and Ottoman rule of Rhodes, and additional fortifications, ancient theater and military premises were built around the temple.

Many people visit the Acropolis not only because of the historical importance of the site, but also because of the view. From the top of the rock you can enjoy view of the sea and of St. Paul`s bay, the most famous beach of Rhodes.

The Acropolis can be reached only on foot, via a short part which starts from the last houses behind the rock. The path is not difficult but in order to reach the top of the Acropolis, you need to climb via some steep steps. Entrance fee of EUR 12 per adult is applied, and in the evenings the citadel is illuminated and seen from almost any point of Lindos.
