Melissani Cave

Boats with visitors in the blue water

Melissani Cave is one of the top attractions of Kefalonia. It is particularly known for its underground lake and the section with the collapsed cave roof where sun penetrates through the opening and makes the water ”glow”.

Mellisani Cave is often called Melissani Lake as well because it can be entered only by boat. The boat is driven by a boatman and there is a fee for the 10-minute ride. The water of the lake is very blue and transparent but the best time to see it is in a sunny day, between 11 am and 2 pm when the sun is high in the sky and shines on the water through the opening. For this reason there may be lots of people waiting in a line in front of the cave exactly in this time period.

The cave is located near the villages of Karavomylos and Sami. The access is easy and there is a parking lot just before the entrance. In summer the cave is open every day and the ticket for adults is approximately EUR 8 per adult.
