Kastro Kimolou
Kastro Kimolou, which means the Castle of Kimolos, is a fortified settlement inside Chorio Kimolou. It is considered one of the best preserved historical monument of this kind of Greece.
Kastro Kimolou was built around 14-15 century. Locals call it ”a village inside the village” because it was used both as a fortress and a village - the houses were constructed next to each other without any space and thus they formed the walls of the fortress. The kastro of Kimolos has the shape of a square, and the houses are the external walls. Some of them are still inhabited or function as cafes and shops and you can see how thick the walls are.
There are two gates which lead to the center of Kastro Kimolou, called the upper gate and the lower gate. The buildings inside are mostly in ruins.
