Located in the area of Apokoronas, Vafes is an old inland village away from the bustle of tourist resorts. It is listed as a traditional settlement by the Greek Government and the houses are preserved in the old Cretan style. In the center you can find a grocery store, two tavernas and an ex olive oil mill which now functions as a museum.
Juts outside Vafes there is a small cave called Krionerida. It is rather a monument because in 1821 the Turks killed 130 residents of the village who were hiding in the cave, by setting fire and suffocating them inside. Next to the cave is the tiny church of Agios Ioannis built in a rock.
