Skiathos Town

Landscape

The only settlement of Skiathos, which bears the name Skiathos Town, is located on its east coast. The locals also know it as Chora (the Greek word for main village of an island) and almost all the population of Skiathos lives here.

The town hosts the harbor and the airport. Right next to the harbor is the islet with the small Bourtzi fortress on it, connected with mainland. This fortress was built by the Venetian Gyzi brothers who conquered the island in 1207 and it is similar to the Bourtzi fortress in Nafplio.

Skiathos Town has the typical for the Sporades architecture with white houses, red-tile roofs and blue-painted window covers. The streets are narrow and cobbled, car-free in the old neighborhood and full of small cafes, tavernas and cocktail bars. At the promenade there are more restaurants and cafes and in the summer it gets very lively.

In the south end of Skiathos is the long beach of Megali Ammos. There you can find plenty of hotels, sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports.
