Serifos Chora

Serifos Chora

Serifos Chora (or just Chora) is the capital village of Serifos up above the port. It is one of the most impressive old settlements of the Cyclades, with white houses and churches cascading down the hill.

At first sight Chora seems to be just above the port of Livadi but this is tricky - the road winds around the hill in a course of 4 km. There are also paths and steps for the brave ones who want to take the distance on foot but this in not recommended in summer, unless early in the morning. Chora consists of two neighborhoods: Kato Chora (the lower village) and Pano Chora (the upper village), as both are accessible only on foot inside and you should leave your car on the parking lots beside the road.

Pano Chora is the more touristy place as there you can visit some of the most significant sights of Serifos - the windmills, the Pano Piatsa (a lovely small square with kafenions) and the two churches atop - Agia Varvara and Agios Konstantinos. The top of Pano Chora around the churches is also known as Kastro, the ancient fortified settlement built by the Venetians, with tiny alleys between the houses. This is the most visited spot of the village because of the unrestricted view toward the port and the nearby island of Sifnos.
