Beaches in Santorini

The beaches of Santorini are as unique as its caldera and the powerful volcanic activity in the past has resulted in the formation of a red beach, white beach, black beach, etc. To be more exact, almost all beaches of the island are dark, as the color varies from grey to different hues of black. The "blackest" are Perissa, Perivolos, Kamari, Agios Georgios and Baxedes. Red beach, however, is only one and fully corresponds to its name - a strip of reddish pebbles and coarse sand backed up by red cliffs. Even the sea around the shore appears red in certain hours during the day, so this is the one you must pay a visit to.

You won`t find soft white sand anywhere on Santorini but on the east coast there are great beach bars with plenty of facilities, and the coarse black sand is pleasant to walk on. Beaches like Vlychada and Messa Pigadia attract with the weird rock formations in multi-colored layers.
