Neokastro

Aerian view

The castle of Pylos, also known as Neokastro (meaning New Fortress) is located on the top of a hill overlooking the port and the entire bay of Navarino. It is called ”new” because it was built after the Old Navarino castle which is near the Gialova lagoon.

Neokastro is one of the best preserved forts in Peloponnese. It dates back to 1573 when it was built during the Ottoman occupancy. The fort has hexagonal shape and five two-storey bastions (one of them has been destroyed). In the bastions you can see various exhibitions about the culture and history of the Peloponnese peninsula.

The castle stays closed on Mondays. Tuesday to Sunday it works every day from 08:00 am to 03:00 pm.
