Portaria

Cobbled alley and houses with view

Portaria is a traditional mountainous village above Volos Town, midway to the ski center of Pelion. The village is built at a high altitude and like the neighbor Makrinitsa, it has panoramic view of the town, the port and the Pagasitikos gulf.

The houses are terrace-built and the cobbled alleys between them are narrow and steep. The road passes through the village center and there are a few municipal parking spaces but you may find parking difficult, especially during weekends and holidays because Portaria is a favorite place for a meal of the people from Volos and the area. It is visited in winter as well because of its proximity to the ski center (about 14 km), as some tourists prefer to stay in lively Portaria at night and travel to the ski tracks during the day. In the summer it is much cooler and fresher than the seaside and a walk around the village is pleasant. There are all kinds of hotels (even spa), plenty of tavernas, cafes, bakeries, fast food and shops selling souvenirs and local products.
