Omalos is the name of a plateau in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of Crete, at an altitude of approximately 1050 m. It is also the starting point for hiking the Samaria gorge. In the plateau there are a few taverns and hotels in which you can stay if you decide to conquer the gorge early in the morning or if you just want to stay in a very tranquil place away from other settlements. Chania Town is 40 km away (at least 1 hour drive), and Paleochora and Sougia on the south coast are also reachable from here via a winding mountainous road with panoramic views.

The entrance for Samaria gorge is about 3 km from the hotels in Omalos, in an area called Xyloskalo.
