Old Town of Kavala

Old houses

The Old Town of Kavala is the area around the port which occupies the entire Panagia hill with the Acropolis of Kavala. It borders Kamares Aqueduct from one side and the sea from 3 sides. The narrow cobbled streets wind around the houses and lead to the top of the hill and the castle.

The best way to explore the Old Town is to start from the area above the port, reach the castle and then descend towards the Aqueduct but you can also start from anywhere around the hill - the alleys up lead to the top and you cannot get lost. Most of the buildings in the Old Town have preserved their original architecture. There you can visit the house of Mohammed (Mehmet) Ali, the Wali of the last Egyptian dynasty who was born and lived all his life in Kavala. The house is now turned into a museum, located at the tip of the peninsula by the sea. You will recognize it by the statue of Mohhamed Ali riding a horse.

Another historical site to see in the Old Town is the Mosque of Halil Bey. It is on the way to the castle, close to the old Imaret which is now functioning as a five star hotel. Cafeterias and tavernas are also available in the area around the Aqueduct and the Imaret, as well as one open-air cafe next to the castle entrance.

For those who are not willing to climb the steep streets, there is a land tourist train which departs from the port every hour or two and tours the alleys of the Old Town.
