The Necromanteion

The Necromanteion (meaning Oracle of Death) is an archeological site in the village of Mesopotamos near Ammoudia. The ruins were discovered in 1958 and they are believed to be an ancient temple devoted to Persephone, Hades and his realm of death, due to its proximity to the Acheron river. According to mythology, the Acheron river was one of the so called rivers of death which divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. Some sources claim that the Necromanteion was the door to the realm of Hades through which the souls of death people passed after they were carried across the river.

The site is open for visitors daily from 8:00 to 20:00h. There are signboards in the village of Mesopotamos which guide to the parking lot and the hill on which the Necromanteion is built.
