Mount Athos
the easternmost prong of the peninsula
Mount Athos
Mount Athos is the easternmost prong of Halkidiki peninsula. Almost the whole of it is occupied by the autonomous monastic republic of the Holy Mountain, a self-governed area with 20 Orthodox monasteries.
At the entrance of the peninsula there are several holiday villages which are not part of the Holy Mountain. The most famous of them, Ouranoupoli, is the border with the Monastic Republic and is known as the last earthly place on the peninsula. Ships with pilgrims depart for the monasteries from Ouranoupoli.
The other resorts in this peninsula are Ierissos and Nea Roda.
