Mavrovouni

Mavrovouni

Mavrovouni is the largest and longest (around 7km) beach in Mani, Peloponnese. At the east end of the beach (in Gythio direction) there is a village sharing the same name. Mavrovouni village is built on a hill and some of the houses have views towards the sea and the beach. On the other side, the village has views toward Gythio coastline, Cranae islet, Tzannetakis Tower and Gythio lighthouse.

The beach is covered with coarse sand and small pebbles. It is wide, up to 50 meters, and with line of trees in some sections. At the back of the beach there are gardens, summer homes, hotels of different sizes, a few small holiday resorts and 4 campsites. The sea is not shallow around the shore but the seafloor slopes gently, and during the summer afternoons (June, July and August) thermal wind appears. There are restaurants and cafes next to the beach and many more in the village. Some of the hotels have parasols and sunbeds on the beach area in front of them.

Caretta caretta turtles lay eggs on Mavrovоuni beach and their nests are marked by Archelon turtle preservation organization. People are advised to stay away from the nests and not damage them.

Due to its enormous size, Mavrovоuni beach always has free space and doesn’t get crowded even in August. Those who seek more privacy can always go to the less visited Vathi and Kamares beaches.
