Maries

Aerial view of the village

Maries is an old mountainous village in the heart of Thassos island. It is away from the seaside and has retained its archaic look with stone houses and wooden balconies. In the course of years some of its residents have moved to Skala Marion which used to be the village fishing harbor but it is now developing tourism as well.

Like Kazaviti - Megalos Prinos and Theologos, Maries has permanent population and tries to attract tourists with its traditional atmosphere and quiet environment. At the small square there are a few family run taverns and guesthouses. Heading further to the mountain, about 3 km away from Maries you will find lake Maries. This is the only lake on the island, surrounded by dense pine trees and with a small waterfall.
