Marathea

Marathea

Marathea is a small inland village huddled between the hills slopes in Mani, Peloponnese. It consists of between 30 and 40 houses spread along a few roads which all intersect at a square with a big church. The area is covered with lush vegetation and olive gardens alternate with bushes and house yards. Around the village some Maniot towers and semi-ruined old houses made of stone can be seen.

In Marathea there are a few villas and houses for rent but they are hidden and away from the central road. The place is suitable for people who want to relax, stay away from the crowd but still have beach and a big village in reasonable distance.

The closest taverna is in the nearby village Karvelas which lies a kilometer away in west direction. More tavernas (restaurants) and petrol station are available in less then 4 kilometers on the main road that goes from Gythio to Areopoli. Above the main road the remains of 13th century castle of Passavas can be explored.

The beaches of Mavrovouni and Vathi are both within 12 minutes drive from Marathea. Gythio is also nearby and it takes 15-20 minutes to reach the town center by car.
