Maleme

Maleme

Maleme is a small seaside village 10 km west of Chania Town, Crete. In Maleme there are many large and small hotels, also houses, villas and other holiday accommodation for rent. The points of interest are the German war cemetery, the Minoan tomb, the traditional ceramic workshops and multiple shops that sell local products like honey, wine and cheese.

Maleme beach is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas and it stretches for almost 3 km. The sand is coarse and mixed with lots of pebbles, and the sea is light blue and transparent.

To the west the village borders a small military airport. The area was the initial landing place of the German paratroopers in Crete during World War II. After fierce fighting and many victims, the Germans successfully captured the airfield. The paratroopers who lost their lives are buried in large German war cemetery on the hill above Maleme. There is also a memorial to the fallen solders of Royal Air Force who died in the battle.
