Loutro

Loutro

Loutro is a scenic small village on the south coast of Crete, between Agia Roumeli and Chora Sfakion. Like Agia Roumeli, it is accessible only by boat or on foot but it offers more hotels and restaurants to visitors. Boats to Loutro leave from Chora Sfakion

Loutro is located on the east side of a small rocky peninsula called Phoenix, and on the other side is the harbor of the nearby village of Livaniana where the closest road for cars ends. There is a coastal path connecting Loutro and the harbor, and the peninsula is considered to be the place where the ancient city of Finikas existed. On the top of the peninsula there ruins of an old Turkish castle, as parts of the walls are preserved and worth the walk.

Everything in Loutro is at or around the seafront and the harbor is in the middle. From both sides of the harbor there are two small pebbled strips with sunbeds and parasol in the summer. Hikers would fall in love with this part of Crete as there is a narrow coastal path which connects Agia Roumeli with Chora Sfakion, passing by Loutro and some magnificent beaches like Agios Pavlos, Likos, Marmara, Perivolia, Timios Stavros and Glika Nera. The route is about 20 km long. Near Loutro are also the gorges of Samaria, Aradena and Imbros, with numerous hiking trails.
