The capital of Thassos
is called Thassos as well but it is popular also as Limenas (meaning port) to distinguish the town from the island. It is located in the north of the island, very close to Keramoti on the mainland. Its permanent inhabitants are about 3000. It is situated at the foot of several hills.
In the past the was an important commercial center and archaeological remains from the 5th century B.C. can be seen - the ruins of the ancient square - Agora, the sanctuary of Zeus, Poseidon, Dionysus and Artemis, and a small amphitheater. In the old town streets are small and narrow (for pedestrians only), rich in fish taverns and souvenir shops. Besides the port for ferries, there is also a fishing (commercial) which can be reached on the promenade.
The capital is the liveliest resort on the island and there is a variety of hotels, restaurants and shops. There is also a bank, post office and medical center. Car and boat rentals for individual tour of the bays in the vicinity are available.
The central beach of Limenas is next to the port and Blue Flag awarded. The beach strip is sandy and the water - shallow. There are sunbeds, umbrellas and showers. Near the town is the beach of Makryammos
, with fine sand.
