Kokkino Chorio

Kokkino Chorio (meaning Red Village) is a village near the sea in Chania region, Crete. The village is known as the filming location of the "Zorba the Greek" movie, starring Anthony Quinn and many of the local people.

There are numerous villas and holiday homes with beautiful sea-view. The coastline around Kokkino Chorio is presented by a series of cliffs and interesting ground formations, with a few caves making it a nice place for hiking. The closest beach is Koutalas, approximately 1 km north of the village, and it is a small pebbly cove with transparent water. Another beach nearby is Almyrida (3 km away). Next to Kokkino Chorio there are tunnels and fortified positions from World War II.

One of the most interesting places of the village is Tzompanakis Blown Glass - the glass blowing factory. Here glass and metal are recycled and manually crafted in art of different size in shape. The factory is open every day (except Monday) and the glass blowing can be witnessed from morning till 3 pm. The factory shop exhibits and sells the produced glassware and visitors can choose from items in many different forms and colors. There is taverna next to the factory which servers delicious Cretan specialties.
