Karteros

Karteros is a long sandy bay east of Heraklion Town, about 7 km away from the town center. It is also very close to Nikos Kazantzakis airport.

The beach of Karteros is 3-4 km long and has developed as a small resort with restaurants, hotels and basic shops. It is a quiet place and the buildings are not as densely constructed as in Ammoudara and other larger resorts. Some parts of the beach are organized with sunbeds and parasols by taverns and beach bars, especially the easternmost end. The water is shallow around the shore and the sea bottom slopes gently but like all north beaches on Crete, waves are almost always present and the sea is rough. The westernmost end of Karteros is also known as Florida beach.
