Kalami

Kalami seen from Vlachatika neighborhood of Gimari

Kalami is a bay in the northeastern part of Corfu, about 30 km from Corfu Town. It has developed as a summer resort with small hotels and villas with view of the bay. Kalami is most famous for the Durrell house - the residence of the Durrel family where the writer Gerald Durrell and his brother Lawrence lived. Namely this house is described in the book My Family and Other Animals and Durrell`s fans would instantly recognize it at first sight - it stands at the seafront at the end of Kalami, visible from the entire beach. Today the house is called the White House and it is available to rent.

Kalami beach is pebbly, with calm and crystal water. Almost no waves appear in this bay and many cruise boats which tour around Corfu stop here. A few tavernas and cafes are lined at the seafront, some of them offering sunbeds and parasols. The narrow coastal street which runs parallel to the sea is known as Durrell street because it leads to the White House. On this street a couple of supermarkets and a cocktail bar can be found, and if you follow it out of the village, the road will lead you first to a villa area and after that to Yaliskari beach in a neighbor bay.

The sea around Kalami is a favorite place of diving lovers because of the sea rocks from both sides of the bay. Kouloura, an idyllic fishing harbor, is 1 km north of Kalami.
