Homer’s Tomb

Tomb on a hill above the sea

It is believed that the Ancient Greek poet Homer died on Ios, his mother`s birthplace. Today his tomb can be found on a hill near the north coast of Ios and the beach of Plakotos, 12 km from Ios Chora.

The asphalt road leads to a small parking place close to the tomb. After that you need to continue on foot via narrow stone path which leads first to a covered rest area and then to the tomb. The distance from the parking place to the final destination is approximately 300 meters but there is no shade except for the covered rest area. The tomb itself is a pile of stones and in front of it there is a stone plate with inscription and a relief sculpture of Homer`s face. The panoramic views all around are another reason to visit this place.
