Monastery of the Great Meteoron

Monastery of the Great Meteoron

The name of this monastery is the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour but it is better known as the Great Meteoron because it is the largest and the oldest one of the group. It is also built on the highest location, on a pinnacle which is more than 600 meters high.

The monastery was founded in the middle of 14 century by a monk called Athanasios (Andronikos) who built a small chapel and lodging for monks on the top of the rock. Through the years the monastery has gradually expanded and today visitors can see three churches, a history and folklore museum, an old kitchen and refectory, a cellar, carpenter`s shop and an ossuary. From the monastery garden a beautiful view to Kastraki village and the vicinity is revealed.

The entrance fee is about EUR 3 per adult. Visiting hours are as follows: from 09:30 to 15:00 every day except Tuesday.
