Georgioupoli

Georgioupoli

Georgioupoli is a seaside resort on the north coast of Crete, between Chania Town and Rethymno Town. It is famous for its long and wide sandy beach which starts from the village and spans for a few kilometers eastwards. The most remote part has formed as a separate resort under the name Paralia Kournas.

A small fishing harbor in the past, today the village has turned into a tourist place with many hotels, restaurants and cafes. Its proximity to the main island road makes it a suitable choice for accommodation if you want to explore both Chania and Rethymno during your holiday, without changing the place of stay. The west end of the village is the point where the Almyros river meets the sea, forming a small lake. There you will find a beach called Kalyvaki, organized with beach facilities. It is small but it is more sheltered than the large beach which is often exposed to winds and waves. Some of the hotels at the seafront have their own sunbeds and parasols, others are provided by beach bars but plenty of free space is available. Water sports are mainly paragliding and windsurfing.

Close to Georgioupoli you can visit the Kournas Lake, and about 20 km southeast you will find the traditional village of Argiroupoli with natural springs, authentic taverns and the archeological site of Ancient Lappa.
