Around the small village square there are a few nice taverns, cafes and a bakery with pastry shop. Lake the rest old inland settlements of Crete, it also has a good number of churches.

Gavalochori is famous for the complex of 24 Venetian wells which can be seen about 1 km from the village, along with two thick trees with strange twisted branches. The folklore museum of Gavalochori is housed in a Venetian building with stone arches and there you can learn about the history of the village and its residents. Nearby is the village of Douliana which also has old houses, and the hiking trail between both will lead you to the cave church of Agios Ioannis.
