Filoti

Seen from the road

Filoti is large village located in the inner part of Naxos. It is approximately 20 km away from the center of Naxos Town, close to Chalkio and Apeiranthos.

In contrast to the seaside settlements of the island, Filoti is place with permanent population all year round. It is built on a mountain slope, as the main road passes through the lowest part of the village where you will find the paved square with a choice of cafes and restaurants. In Filoti you can visit one of the historical Venetian towers of Naxos - the Barozzi tower, and the Cheimarros tower is also nearby, on the way to isolated Kalantos bay. Another place of interest nearby is the Zas mountain where you can visit the springs of Aria and the Zas Cave - according to mythology, this was the cave where the god Zeus spent his childhood.

While traveling in and around the village, you will notice a few small white churches perched on hills, all with fantastic views from above. The church of Agia Irini is the closest one to the village, with view of the village and the road to Apeiranthos. But the tiny chapel of Agios Ioannis looks even more impressive despite its size, because it is on the very top of a high rocky hill.
