Epidaurus

Panoramic view of the ancient theater

Epidaurus (Epidavros) was a small Greek town in antiquity, and its ruins can be visited at the archeological site of Epidaurus in northeast Peloponnese. The main focus falls on its large ancient theater famous for the perfect acoustics and design.

The archeological complex lies near the village of Lygourio, 27 km away from Nafplio. It is located in a valley, away from villages, although there is a seaside settlement called Palaea Epidauros 15 km away from the site where you can see other ruins of the ancient town. The theater impresses with its size (it had capacity for 14 000 spectators), symmetry and extraordinary acoustics which allows even the rearmost rows to hear the actors and performers on the stage non-amplified. Apart from the theater, visitors can see the Sanctuary of Asklepios, an ancient stadium and an archeological museum.
