Engares

Big white church with red roof

The name of this village is often written as "Eggares" in English but it is pronounced as "Engares". It is a small white village 8 km away from the center of Naxos Town, located in a fertile valley and engaged in farming.

The main place of interest in Engares is the Olive Press Museum - you can learn about the process of olive oil production, taste olives and buy natural cosmetics and other olive oil products. There is also a cafeteria in front of the museum and one taverna in the village. Engares is small and a walk in the quiet alleys would not take long. The old neighborhood of Mesa Gitonia is about 2 km away from the village (follow the signs) and there you can visit the ruins of a watermill, the church of Panagia Monastiriotissa and the Foufopoulos (Prantounas) tower.
